ASUU STRIKE: no-work-no-pay

The Federal of Government on Thursday directed Vice Chancellors of federal universities and inter-varsity centres to apply the No-work-no-pay rule on striking lecturers but pay salaries to non-teaching staff.

This comes after several attempts by the federal government to end the ongoing industrial action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) failed.

The union earlier warned that students may stay long at home as no resolution has been met in the negotiation with the FG and called on parents and students to understand as it is the only way to save Nigeria's university from collapse.

The directive was sent through a memo by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) through the University Vice-Chancellors and signed by Dr S. B. Ramon-Yusuf, NUC Director, Research, Innovation, and Information Technology

The memo read in full, "In view of the current Industrial action by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the federal government has directed that there shall be no payment of any form of salaries and allowances to the staff on strike in federal and inter-varsity centres.

"Consequently, I am to direct Vice-Chancellors to apply the "No-work-no-pay" rule. However, Universities and inter-varsity centres are to pay salaries and allowance to Non-teaching staff.

"All Vice Chancellors and directors of centres should note that the salaries to staff on strike from whatever source of funds shall be viewed as violation of extant rules and directives of the federal government of Nigeria."
